My Name

Alexis Batista is my name and at times I think that it is the worst name known to man. I guess that my last name isn't that bad, but my first name is the one that really gets to me. First of all, as you can notice "Alexis" is basically a girl's name.

Now why would you name a boy a girl's name? That question is very easy to answer. My parents didn't give the name to punish me or anything like that but there are other reasons for the name. I can start off by telling that my mother is from the Dominican Republic, and over there "Alexis" is naturally a boy's name. That wasn't the only reason that I was named Alexis. A long time ago I had asked my dad why he had named me this horrible name and he told me a story of a boxer that he admired greatly named Alexis something. I use the word something because I can barely remember the story and all I know is that he was a terrific boxer. I guess that my dad's view of naming me is much cooler.

The name Alexis began to haunt since the first day of high school. I won't ever forget it. The first day of classes, the science teacher was taking attendance and she got to my name. When she announced my name I did what every other student does and answered "here". That was the start of my shame by having Alexis as my first name. After I had said here she looked at me and out a smile on her face and said, "No really where is Alexis". She said that because, as we all know Alexis is a girl's name and as you can see I am not a girl. So in fact, to this day in college, professors still make me go through all of that trouble with name. If they don't actually interrogate me, then they just give me a very odd face.

Through all of that trouble, I am still very proud of my name and I won't ever change it for the world.

To no surprise as I read your blogs at first I just assumed it was a girl. Then I read this particular blog about your name and in which case, you are definitely not a girl. It must be hard to deal with having this name, but it is unique especially the reason why you have it. My name is Justine and plenty of times I have been mistaken for Justin, but now I could careless. If someone were to call me that on the street I would still answer as if it was my real name. I know you would not change you name, but if you did what name would you choose?
